Virtually everything we use, wear, touch, drive, is made by the chemical industry. Unfortunately, nearly all of
these products are manufactured from fossil feedstocks. Therefore, our current chemical system needs to change. We must seek radically different solutions to allow a human population of 10 billion by 2050 to live with all the materials they want, without further climate change.
Relement was founded by people who are crazy about chemistry and serious about getting rid of the use of fossil resources. We focus on aromatic chemical building blocks, needed today and in the future. Aromatics provide important properties to many applications such as gloss, scratch resistance and UV stability. 40% of all chemical building blocks are aromatics which can only be produced from fossil feedstock: until now!
Relement is the first company worldwide that can offer specialty biobased aromatics suitable for difficult to recycle products such as coatings, lubricants, adhesives and specialty composites. These specialty bio-aromatics are not only more sustainable, they provide better quality: for example, paint becomes harder and more scratch resistant. An unmatched combination of product performance and sustainability. Relement will change the future of the chemical industry so that we can make a big step forward in a more sustainable planet. Relement is a start-up pioneer since mid 2020 in the emerging industry of renewable chemistry and originated in TNO managed program branded “Biorizon” which exists since 2013.

The team
We are a diverse team of experienced people who are crazy about chemistry and committed of getting rid of fossil resources. We will use our in-depth knowledge of the chemical industry to create a successful bio-aromatics business. We are driven to utilize our combined know-how and extensive network to bring sustainable solutions to the chemical industry together with customers and partners.
Roger Blokland
CEO
Roger has extensive business experience in the (renewable) chemicals and bio-fuels industry, ranging from management roles within fortune 100 companies to working within start-ups. He understands the drivers and innovation processes, and what is needed to get results. He has co-founded Relement to make a long term positive impact with bio-based aromatics and to create the chemical company of the future.
Stefano Iannacone
CTO
Stefano has extensive experience in process technology research & development and scale-up programmes, all the way to deployment of new technologies. Both in-house or through collaborations with external partners, as well as in licensing and technical services to third parties.
He is responsible for the key developments for Relement’s technical roadmap and manages the related IP portfolio.
Monique Wekking
CCO
Monique has extensive experience working in the chemical and biobased segment as consultant and senior business developer. Furthermore, she set up a new business from scratch at a former employer. With demonstrated success in forming customer relationships she will drive commercial development for Relement.
Jos van Beek
CFO
Jos has extensive experience as financial director within various DSM business groups, incl. Resins & Functional Materials now part of Covestro. Today he supports various start-up companies involved in sustainable materials, including Relement. He has an education in Business and financial economics, post-doc corporate finance and is certified controller.
